Participate Now in the 2021 Census!

On behalf of Statistics Canada, we are pleased to inform you that the 2021 Census of Population is underway. For collective dwellings such as a hotel, motel campground, YMCA/YWCA, Ronald McDonald House, hostel or school residence, the census has been in progress since April 26th and need remaining questionnaires to be completed immediately.

Information collected through the census will provide decision-makers with data needed to forecast funding requirements and plan for services such as schools, public transportation, hospitals, and residences for temporary accommodation.

Participating is easy and secure.

Starting April 26th 2021, administrators of collective dwellings like yours across Canada will receive an invitation letter or email from Statistics Canada asking them to complete their online questionnaire.  The letter contains instructions about how to complete the online questionnaire for your facility and the secure access code required to complete it. It is important that you keep this document.

Each administrator will be required to complete a short series of questions about their establishment. The census questionnaire will need to be completed via an online portal as soon as possible. The portal is easy to use and secure. If you are not the administrator but you receive the letter or email at the end of April, please ensure that you pass it on to the person responsible for administration at your establishment.

If you have any questions, please contact Statistics Canada by phone at 1-877-949-9492 (TTY: 1-800-363-7629*), by email at infostats@canada.ca, or consult the collectives webpage.

TOURISM VANCOUVER NEWS

Tourism Vancouver Visitor Centre Information

While our Visitor Centre may currently be closed, our team has been busy assisting visitors and locals through email, over the phone, and through LiveChat on our website. Here are some insights and findings from April:

  • Inquiries decreased about 36% from March to April, likely due to March break inquiries and increased travel restrictions being introduced within British Columbia and across the country.
  • Most of the inquiries originated from residents of Metro Vancouver (29%); and US residents (29%); Ontario and Quebec (19%); rest of Canada (13%); rest of the world (10%).
  • Primary inquiries from Metro Vancouver residents and those within Canada centered around:
    • Attractions and Sightseeing suggestions
    • Clarification on COVID-19 protocols/Health Orders in British Columbia
    • Information on other areas of BC, outside of Metro Vancouver
  • Top inquiries from outside of Canada remain existing travel restrictions and an idea of when the restrictions will be lifted. However, there were quite a few potential visitors from within the United States who were unaware of travel restrictions/quarantine or had misinformation regarding exemptions from quarantine due to vaccination. Resources available at travel.gov.ca have been quite helpful in helping those guests.
  • For both Canadian and United States residents, many were planning 2-3 months in advance of planned arrival in Vancouver, with similar numbers still planning with travel dates unknown.
  • Most potential visitors outside of North America have no travel dates in mind.

Please continue to keep our team up to date on what is going on at your business, and what is upcoming, so we can provide timely information to prospective visitors. You can send updates to visitvancouver@tourismvancouver.com

BC Resident Sentiment - Current Level of Welcome Towards Visitors

BC resident sentiment towards seeing advertising for the Province as a destination for visitors is now net negative for all regions of origin (including from nearby communities, from other parts of Province, from rest of Canada, other US, International). This sentiment is currently at one of the lowest points since tracking began.

We are seeing more positive sentiment (net) from residents in other parts of Canada towards seeing advertising of their destination as a place to visit.

Leger North America Tracker

Overall, 80% of Canadians have been vaccinated or intend to get vaccinated – with some variations by Province. For example, highest in BC (86%) and lowest in Alberta (71%). In the U.S., 63% of Americans have been and/or plan to get vaccinated.

This was interesting as well, although we have vaccines now, fears of catching the virus among Canadians are exactly the same as when this pandemic started over a year ago at 57%. Most Canadians believe that we currently in the worst part of this pandemic. In contrast, the same proportion (47%) of Americans think that the worst of the crises has passed for them. Perhaps due to the availability of vaccines vs short supply here in Canada.
