MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT AND CEO, ROYCE CHWIN

Dear Members,

We know the challenges that COVID-19 has presented to our industry are not short-term. One of the many ways the team at Tourism Vancouver is working hard to support the rebuild and eventual restart of our industry is to rebuild confidence with visitors by strengthening our commitment to the health and safety of our destination.

We are proud to report to you that Tourism Vancouver has recently been granted the Safe Travels Stamp from the World Travel and Trade Council (WTTC). The Safe Travels stamp is a signal to visitors that our destination is safe to visit and as a member business, we encourage you to apply for the stamp using this form to demonstrate that your business has also met global health and hygiene protocols.

Our local community is integral to how people are experiencing our city and that’s why Tourism Vancouver is creating a community pledge that will engage with citizens to do their part in keeping our city safe and preserving the natural beauty of our region for all. The second part of this initiative will be to introduce a visitor pledge so that travellers can support our community’s efforts to flatten the curve. We will be sure to share more details including launch dates when ready.

While the tourism landscape is likely to continue to be uncertain for some time to come, I hope you will join us next week for our 117th AGM to hear how Tourism Vancouver is changing for the future. Thank you for your trust on this journey to recovery and most importantly, I am grateful that we get to do this together.

Sincerely,

Royce Chwin
Tourism Vancouver Team Member
President and CEO

FEDERAL CONSULTATION ON PLASTIC POLLUTION POLICY

The federal government wants to hear from Canadians and stakeholders on their approach to protect the environment from plastic pollution and reduce waste through a more circular economy. They are seeking comments on A Proposed Integrated Management Approach to Plastic Products to Prevent Waste and Pollution and the proposed Order to add “plastic manufactured items” to Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA). Your comments will help inform actions to advance the comprehensive plastic agenda to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030 and foster a circular economy that keeps plastic in the economy and out of the environment.

The policy & consultations are open for public comment until December 9th and they are looking for specific input from the hospitality and tourism sector.

TOURISM INDUSTRY NEWS

#WeAreTourism Movement Update

Launched over the summer by the Metro Vancouver Tourism & Hospitality Industry Response and Recovery Task Force #WeAreTourism was a call to tourism DMOs, sector associations and businesses to crowd-source & amplify diverse human stories of tourism in Metro Vancouver. You may have seen the hashtag #WeAreTourism trending locally on social media featuring Metro Vancouver neighbourhoods, attractions and tourist experiences.

Now, a group of three volunteers from the tourism industry is taking the movement to our tourism stakeholders across Metro Vancouver, looking for unique stories that demonstrate the spirit of this series: stories of challenge and hope - drawing attention to the individual human stories of our industry associates, reduce community fear and negativity while building a connection with our communities.

This special series has come together from interviews and photo sessions with businesses that have demonstrated this spirit through new partnerships or a unique pivot that were a result of the pandemic. Stakeholders and their partner organizations are encouraged to share the content and support each other through this period by:

  • Following #WeAreTourism on your social channels to see the latest stories
  • Sharing and resharing the content
  • Connecting us with other great stories for this series!
